Skopes menswear opened its 20th UK store at Metrocentre in Gateshead on 3rd June 2023! The 2,500 sq ft store sells Skopes' full range of men’s tailoring including suits, outerwear, shirts, footwear and accessories in a range of contemporary styles, fits and colours, with sizes ranging from 34” to 62” chest. Opening on the lower level of the Platinum Mall, opposite JD Sports, the new store will showcase the experiential look and feel that was originally created for Skopes by award winning retail interior designers Dalziel and Pow, for the brand’s Westfield White City store in London when it launched in 2018. The concept has since been further developed by Skopes for their Sheffield Meadowhall store which opened in 2019, and now the company is destined to bring it’s unique approach to men’s formalwear to the North East.
Managing Director Simon Cope says: “This is an exciting new opening for Skopes and further cements our commitment to offering customers not just garments, but a true retail experience that matches their changing needs.
“Men shop by looking for an overall look and style, not just one garment or piece within a collection. And that’s exactly what they will be able to do in our new Gateshead store, in an informal friendly and accessible environment, without any of the “airs and graces” that many still associate with buying a suit.”
Ben Cox of Sovereign Centros, Senior Asset Manager for Metrocentre, commented: “We’re excited to welcome Skopes to Metrocentre and are confident that their unique approach to men’s formalwear will appeal to our customers.
“Skopes will join new arrival Moda in Pelle and Rowen Homes, who will both be open by the end of April, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to ensuring we have a diverse range of brands and stores on offer at Metrocentre.”
The family-owned British tailoring business, which is headquartered in Leeds, West Yorkshire, has operations nationwide and in Europe that cover 20 retail stores, 32 concessions, its own transactional online store, third party multi-channel distribution partnerships with such as Next, Very and Jacamo, and a host of renowned independent retail stockists via its Wholesale division.
The business was founded by Simon’s grandfather Sydney Cope in 1948, who sought out fabric from Yorkshire’s finest mills to create bespoke trousers. In the 1970s and 80s his son Geoffrey took the reins. Since then, Simon has been at the helm as the third generation to lead the family business.
Skopes is currently at £32 million turnover and is eyeing £50 million turnover in the next three to five years.
This year’s Gateshead store opening is part of its 75th anniversary celebrations and there are plans for events to be held across its retail portfolio, including Metrocentre. Further store openings are also planned soon.
